Biorock Indonesia
Biorock Indonesia is developing technology for coral reef rehabilitation. Created in 2015, Biorock Indonesia (BI) has been working towards creating industry standards for the implementation of coral reef rehabilitation technologies.
With a variety of key programs, they intend to include assistance for other organizations working to develop bio rocks, spread awareness, and engage the public through internships, volunteering, and research programs.
Their Biorock Garden is a means to use biorock technology to facilitate the stronger, healthier, and faster growth of coral reefs. This would equip the reefs in fighting human activity and climate change. Cared for by a gardener, every reef is tended to before installation into the garden.
Among the other programs is Scholar Reef which is a space for students and coral protectors of the future to learn and develop their scientific capabilities through research and internship opportunities.
Additionally, they organize public educational tours to spread awareness about Biorock technology and its role in coral reef conservation and rehabilitation. With engaging activities such as Introduction to Biorock Technology and Guided Snorkle, visitors learn via experience.
Lastly, with a shore protection facility, Biorock technology actively works towards repairing and restoring abrasions of beaches and by installing biorock method and breakwater structure.
The non-profit organization has sixteen project sites in eight provisions of Indonesia. These are Bali, Maluku, North Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, DKI Jakarta, Lampung, and West Sumatera. Targeting four UN sustainable development goals, namely Climate Change, Life Below Water, Partnership for the Goals, and Decent work and economic growth, Biorock Indonesia has made a major impact in restoring up to 200km2 coral restoration and 5km beach restoration.
